INCLUSIVE LOCAL GOVERNMENT: Building Equality, embracing diversity

The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms states, “Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination and, in particular, without discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age or mental of physical disability”.

Today, there is broad recognition that our country, our institutions-and we as citizens-have not always lived up to these ideals.  Together, we can and must do better.

What role can local governments play? To start,we need to listen, and we need to trade ideas that can lead to positive change. As part of that process, we invite you to join us online for CivX 2021.

Each of our six speakers will have unique stories to tell, and useful resources to share. Our presenters include:

Kevin McCort
Kevin McCort is President and CEO of Vancouver Foundation.  With more than 30 years of service to the non-profit sector, both in Canada and around the world, he has earned a reputation as a smart, strategic leader who always puts community at the heart of his work.  Kevin has led his team in a transformation of Vancouver Foundation’s approach to community granting, focusing on supporting systems change work that address root causes of pressing social, cultural and environmental issues.

Dr. Jennifer Wolowic
Jennifer Wolowic is the project manager for Simon Fraser University’s Strengthening Canadian Democracy Initiative. She brings 15 years of experience engaging marginalized communities including African American, First Nations, and LGBTQ communities to the initiative.

Gabrielle Peters
A disabled writer and policy analyst and a commissioner on the Vancouver City Planning Commission.  She is co-founder of Dignity Denied and the Disability Filibuster and has been a leading voice in applying a disability lens to local, provincial and national policy issues.
